Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, on Wednesday held a meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, a development that comes amid increasing public discussion over Obasanjo’s political engagement ahead of the 2027 general election.
Images from the meeting were posted on X by Obi’s campaign photographer, Esther Umoh.
Sharing the photographs, Umoh wrote, “Earlier today, the presidential candidate of the NDC, Peter Obi, met with former president Olusegun Obasanjo.”
The photographs captured Obi, dressed in a blue traditional outfit, alongside Obasanjo, who appeared in a white native attire with a blue patterned cap. A Catholic bishop was also present during parts of the meeting, with the images showing the trio both indoors and outdoors.
As of the time this report was filed, neither Obi nor Obasanjo had revealed what was discussed during the visit.
The meeting follows renewed controversy surrounding Obasanjo’s political position ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Recently, the Yoruba Ronu Leadership Forum alleged that the former president was quietly supporting President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term while publicly associating with opposition politicians.
The allegation was rejected by Obasanjo’s former Political Adviser, Akin Osuntokun, who maintained that the former president was instrumental in putting together a joint presidential ticket involving Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, with Kwankwaso expected to run as Obi’s vice-presidential candidate.
During an interview on ARISE Television, Osuntokun said Obasanjo remained firmly behind the opposition coalition.
“If you can say that Obasanjo is supporting any ticket, it is the Peter Obi-Kwankwaso ticket. As a matter of fact, he is the principal sponsor of that ticket,” he said.
Wednesday’s meeting is likely to intensify speculation over Obasanjo’s role in ongoing consultations among opposition figures ahead of the 2027 elections, although no official explanation has been provided regarding the purpose of the visit.
