Former President Olusegun Obasanjo once commended Senator Buruji Kashamu, for his philanthropic work, it has been learnt.
When Obasanjo visited the empowerment programme of Omo-Ilu foundation, owned by the late senator who represented Ogun East between 2015 and 2019, the former president prayed for Kashamu for bringing more people to the Peoples Democratic Party through his generous gestures.
A video clip of the occasion was uploaded in 2015, but it is unclear when the programme held.
Obasanjo spoke in Yoruba in the video.
“The work you have done in the past, we appreciate it. God will reward you for that. God will not take away those things you do that make you happy,” Obasanjo had said in the video.
Kashamu died from COVID-19 complications at a Lagos hospital, on Saturday, at the age of 62.
But Obasanjo, in a sarcastic condolence letter, said Kashamu’s life was a lesson for all.
He accused the Ogun PDP financier of using “the manoeuvre of law and politics to escape from facing justice on alleged criminal offence in Nigeria and outside Nigeria.”
But former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, in a response to Obasanjo’s comment, asked the former president to stop acting like “a saint”, saying Nigerians were looking forward to his own end.
Kashamu fell out with Obasanjo in the build-up to the 2015 general elections and both men did not reconcile till PDP stalwart died.
In October 2014, Kashamu had said the Obasanjo administration gave the evidence that cleared him of drug-related charges in the United Kingdom.
