After weeks of intense political turmoil, Mudashiru Obasa has reclaimed his position as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, following the resignation of Mojisola Meranda, who now resumes her former role as Deputy Speaker. This unexpected turn of events marks a striking reversal of the January 13 decision that saw Obasa ousted by 32 lawmakers.
Power Play and Political Intrigues
The crisis, which rocked the state’s legislative chamber, has been attributed to high-level political interference and strategic negotiations. Sources confirm that the Presidency and key All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders played pivotal roles in influencing the Assembly members to reinstate Obasa.
Key meetings involving APC Chairman Cornelius Ojelabi, Attorney General Lawal Mohammed Alade Pedro (SAN), and 38 lawmakers were instrumental in brokering the truce. The Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Lagos’ most influential political body, was also mobilized to pressure lawmakers into backing Obasa’s return.
Meanwhile, the disbandment of the Bisi Akande-led reconciliation committee signaled a shift in strategy, as its findings reportedly favored Meranda over Obasa. However, with the Presidency’s intervention, pro-Obasa forces gained the upper hand.

What This Means for Lagos Politics
Obasa’s return underscores the weight of party loyalty in Nigeria’s political landscape, where internal power struggles are often settled outside legislative chambers.
While the Assembly has momentarily restored stability, tensions remain high, with factions still divided over Obasa’s leadership. The lawsuit filed by Obasa against Meranda and 36 lawmakers remains unresolved, with the Lagos High Court set to hear pending applications on March 7, 2025.
Should dissenting lawmakers refuse to back down, the judicial system may ultimately determine the legitimacy of Obasa’s return—further prolonging an already tumultuous chapter in Lagos politics.
For now, however, the status quo has been restored, but at what cost to democracy and legislative independence?
