Obi Celebrates 65th Birthday With ₦10m Donation To Anambra Hospital

Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has donated ₦10 million to St. Raphael’s Hospital in Umueri, Anambra State, to support healthcare services as part of activities marking his 65th birthday.

Obi said he deliberately chose to celebrate the milestone through acts of service, maintaining that birthdays should focus on helping others rather than personal celebrations.

In a statement released on Sunday, July 19, the former Anambra State governor said he began his birthday with a Mass of Thanksgiving in Onitsha before travelling to the rural hospital in Anambra East Local Government Area.

“In furtherance of my belief that birthdays should be occasions for service rather than self-indulgence, I donated the sum of ₦10 million to support the hospital’s work of providing quality healthcare to the people,” he wrote.

Obi said his visit to the hospital, where he interacted with patients and staff, reinforced his belief in compassionate leadership and the need to improve access to healthcare.

“As I was conducted around the hospital and saw patients in their moments of vulnerability, I was reminded again of our shared humanity.

“Some of those receiving care may not even have the financial means to settle their hospital bills, yet they deserve compassion, dignity, and access to quality healthcare,” he added.

He described hospitals and schools as critical investments for any nation, noting that healthcare preserves lives while education secures the future.

Obi disclosed that he would spend the rest of the month visiting hospitals and schools, where he plans to make further donations.

“Rather than a celebration centred on me, I desire a celebration that places humanity at the centre,” he said.
