Obi on Zamfara Mining Tragedy: Nigerians’ Lives Must Come First

The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has stressed that the lives of Nigerians must always be regarded as the nation’s greatest asset.

Obi made this known on Sunday, the 28th of September, 2025, through a post on his official X account while responding to the deadly incident at the Kadauri mining field in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, where several casualties were reported.

The former governor of Anambra noted that the disaster highlights the urgent necessity of securing Nigeria’s solid minerals sector through proper regulation, strict licensing, enforcement of international safety practices, and the establishment of well-equipped emergency response systems.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic incident at the Kadauri mining site in Maru Local Government Area, Zamfara State, where lives were lost.

“My heartfelt prayers and condolences go to the bereaved families and to the good people of Zamfara at this difficult time.

“I commend the Governor and the State rescue teams for the efforts made so far. The lives of our citizens must remain our most valuable resource and must be protected at all costs.

The safety and transparency of operations of our mining sites must be prioritised so that tragedies like this are prevented in the future. I pray that many more are rescued alive and may the souls of those departed rest in perfect peace,” he wrote.
