The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has launched a scathing critique of the current administration, accusing the Nigerian government of systematically undermining the nation’s democratic foundations.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Monday, the 15th of December, 2025, Tanko expressed grave concerns over the trajectory of the country’s political landscape, suggesting that the current state of affairs is reaching a breaking point.
During the broadcast, Tanko issued a direct plea for global intervention, warning that the stakes extend far beyond Nigeria’s borders. He argued that “The government of Nigeria is deliberately killing democracy. International communities need to come in and deal with with the issue.” He further emphasized the strategic importance of the country, noting that “Nigeria is the most populous Black nation in the world, and if anything happens to its democracy, others will suffer for it.”

Addressing those currently at the helm of power, the coordinator cautioned against the dangers of historical repetition and the refusal to learn from the failures of previous administrations. He lamented the lack of progress within the political framework, stating, “Because you are in power now, you repeat the same mistake that other people have already made, that does not grow the system.”
Despite his harsh assessment of the current political climate, Tanko maintained that the democratic model remains the ideal path for the country, provided the internal mechanisms are reformed. He observed that while many still believe in the system, the execution of political processes has become a source of national frustration. He concluded by saying, “But you could also agree with me that we have a majority of people who are in government, and democracy is the best of all kinds of government at the moment that we all know, except for the process that is making it look very ugly and totally unacceptable to Nigeria.”
