Ogun Govt Suspends Traditional Ruler Over Assault Allegations

The Ogun State Government has suspended the traditional ruler of Orile Ifo, Oba Abdulsemiu Adewale, for six months following allegations of uncivil conduct involving the assault of an elderly man.

A viral video circulating on social media showed the monarch ordering an elderly man to kneel, though the reason for the punishment remains unclear.

In a statement released on Monday, the state’s Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs disclosed that the decision was reached after both the traditional ruler and the victim were summoned for questioning by the Commissioner, Ganiyu Hamzat.

Hamzat noted that the government, in conjunction with the Egba Traditional Council, acted in line with Section 52(1) of the Obas and Chiefs’ Law of Ogun State 2021.

He emphasized that the suspension was necessary to curb reckless utterances and public misconduct by the monarch, which had become a source of public concern.

The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, has also ordered a discreet investigation into the matter, assuring that due process will be followed while upholding the rule of law and fundamental human rights.

In a statement issued in Abeokuta, the state capital, police spokesperson Omolola Odutola confirmed that both Oba Adewale and the elderly victim, identified as Mr. Areola Abraham, had been interrogated at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran.

“The Ogun State Police Command has taken cognizance of a disturbing video circulating on social media, in which an elderly man, Mr. Areola Abraham, was seen prostrating while being subjected to verbal abuse and assault by Oba Abdulsemiu Adewale Ogunjobi, the Olorile of Orile Ifo,” Odutola said.

She further assured that the police command unequivocally condemns any form of assault, harassment, or violence, regardless of the individuals involved.

“The command will ensure that justice is served and will keep the public informed of relevant updates as the investigation progresses,” she added.

The incident has sparked reactions from the public, with many calling for stricter measures to curb abuse of power by traditional rulers.
