Ahead of Saturday’s governorship election, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has urged President Bola Tinubu to ensure the impartiality of security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Ohanaeze appealed to Tinubu to ensure the institution’s commitment to safeguarding voters and ensuring that the votes of Imo people count on Saturday.
It also called on the Nigeria Labour Congress to shelve its planned nationwide strike scheduled for Wednesday.
Factional Secretary General of Ohanaeze, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, in a statement, urged Governor Uzodinma and the NLC President, Joe Ajaero to ensure peace in Imo State.
The group stressed that the recent violence may lead to voter apathy during Saturday’s election.
Ohanaeze also commended the efforts of the Presidency, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for swiftly implementing one of the conditions set forth by the NLC and Trade Union Congress.
According to the statement, “In light of recent events, Ohanaeze Ndigbo is calling upon the NLC to consider shelving the proposed Nationwide Strike scheduled for 8th November 2023. This appeal is made in recognition of the redeployment of Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Barde, and to foster an environment of peace and stability in Imo State.
“We acknowledge that both Governor Hope Uzodinma and Joe Ajaero are prominent Igbo sons, and we implore them to prioritize the well-being of Imo State above all else. The recent violence in Imo State has raised concerns about potential voter apathy and low turnout during the upcoming elections.
“We urge all Imolites, both citizens and residents, to exercise their civic rights and participate in the electoral process by voting according to their conscience and choice.
“The destiny and future of Imo State lie in the hands of its people. Therefore, we urge the Imo State Government, organized labour unions (NLC and TUC), and Biafra agitators to respect the rights and freedoms of Imo citizens and residents to freely express their choices at the polls.
“President Tinubu must ensure the independence and impartiality of security agents and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in carrying out their constitutional duties. Their commitment to safeguarding the lives of voters and ensuring that the votes count is crucial for a transparent and PL credible electoral process.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo deeply believes in the importance of peaceful elections and the power of the democratic process. We call upon all stakeholders to work together in fostering an atmosphere of harmony, security, and fairness during the State Gubernatorial Elections in Imo State. Let us all join hands to ensure that the voice of every Imo citizen is heard and respected.”
