The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, recently delivered a stern critique regarding Africa’s failure to preserve records of its early civilizations, asserting that this oversight is a major factor in the continent’s current difficulties.
Speaking at the grand finale of his 10th coronation anniversary events in Iwo on Sunday, the 16th of November, 2025, the monarch emphasized that the absence of organized historical documents has hindered Africa’s progress. He urged the continent to return to its roots as a prerequisite for advancement.
Oba Akanbi was emphatic about the consequences of this historical gap.
He stated, “The failure that resulted from non-documentation of our rich beginning has placed us behind. Africa is the source of humanity. In my time, Africans will rise and Nigerians will smile.”
Nevertheless, the Oluwo expressed confidence in Africa’s future, stressing its fundamental status as the origin of mankind, and predicted a renaissance for the continent.
Oba Akanbi highlighted the significant focus on education achieved within Iwoland during his ten-year reign, noting the area’s emergence as a major producer of doctorate holders in Nigeria.
He affirmed, “Iwoland values education more than ever before. Today, we are one of the highest producers of academic doctorate holders. Academically, Iwoland has to her credit three private universities, one polytechnic, a sports academy, and one Federal College of Education.”
Reflecting on his leadership, the traditional ruler noted the successful restoration of Iwo’s historical traditional dignity and urged citizens and detractors to prioritize developmental pursuits over negativity.
He stated, “Traditionally, I have achieved it. The traditional spirit of Oluwo is alive, very active, and agile beyond relegation. I don’t pay attention to distractions. Only people with positive foresight are riding with us currently.”
On the economic front, the Oluwo acknowledged steady growth, increased security, and new business investments in Iwoland.
According to him, “Economic growth in Iwoland has been steady, with improved security and new business investments. Hotels and event centres are multiplying, but we need more production firms to boost employment. Market men and women are testifying to increased sales daily.”
The monarch pressed indigenes to actively attract investors, seeing industrial expansion as a means to reduce reliance on extended family support. He also issued a clear directive to local political representatives:
“Politically, I charge Iwo-born politicians to represent and promote Iwoland interests at all costs. Without political strength, delay may be denial,” he warned.

The Oba also proudly described his palace as a center for intellectual and cultural activity, successfully blending ancient traditions with modern perspectives.
“My reign stands as an exemplary model of this dialogue between tradition and modernity,” he added.
Dignitaries present at the celebration praised the Oluwo’s impact and leadership.
Representing President Bola Tinubu, Engr. Joseph Olasupo Olasunkanmi Tegbe acknowledged the revival of Yoruba culture under the Oluwo and specifically mentioned the positive impact of inter-religious unity in the area. He assured attendees that the President intends to support Iwoland with developmental projects.
Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, congratulated Oba Akanbi, describing him as a unifier whose work extends beyond Iwoland.
Sunday Olufemi Oroniyi, Osun State Commissioner for Water Resources, spoke on behalf of Governor Ademola Adeleke, praising the Oluwo as a dogged ruler who has provided immense cooperation to the state government. He also confirmed that the Oluwo will maintain his number four position in the Osun State Council of Traditional Rulers.
Other prominent guests included the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade; the Owa of Ijeshaland, Oba Adesuyi Clement Haastrup; and the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola.
