Omokri Gets Diplomatic Clearance For Mexico Posting

Mexico has granted approval for Reno Omokri to serve as Nigeria’s ambassador, clearing the way for his diplomatic posting after months of waiting.

Omokri announced the development on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, saying José Manuel Briseño Flores, Chargé d’Affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Abuja, delivered the formal clearance to Ambassador Babagana Wakil, Director of Protocol at Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

His appointment also covers concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

President Bola Tinubu nominated Omokri for an ambassadorial position in November 2025. The Senate confirmed his nomination in December alongside those of former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode and former Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman Mahmood Yakubu.

On March 6, 2026, Tinubu approved the deployment of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners to foreign missions, assigning Omokri to Mexico City.

His posting awaited Mexico’s formal consent, known as agrément. On August 1, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Mexico and Japan had yet to communicate approval for outstanding ambassadorial appointments, adding that diplomatic engagements were ongoing.

Omokri had earlier denied claims that Mexico rejected his nomination. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today in June, he attributed the delay to diplomatic procedures and preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada.

The latest approval confirms Mexico’s acceptance of his nomination, although no date was announced for him to assume duty.

Omokri previously served as a media aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan and is known for his political commentary.
