Onanuga Defends Tinubu’s $100k Reward to Falcons

Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga has backed the cash and housing rewards given to the Super Falcons following their WAFCON 2024 win in Morocco.

Reacting to public criticism on X, Onanuga questioned why some Nigerians would oppose such a gesture.

He compared it to the Big Brother Naija show, where the winner walks away with a ₦150 million grand prize.

“When you remember that Multichoice, the organizer of the BBNaija reality show, is offering the winner ₦150 million grand prize, you wonder why some Nigerians are unappreciative of President Tinubu’s rewards to the Super Falcons,” Onanuga wrote.

“President Tinubu has rewarded excellence, creativity, hard work, soccer artistry, and the undying Nigerian spirit.”

President Tinubu reportedly gave $100,000 each to the 24 players and $50,000 to each member of the technical crew.

The players and 11 coaching staff also received national honours as Officers of the Order of the Niger (OON).

Beyond the cash gifts, all team members will be allocated three-bedroom homes through the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Housing Scheme.
