A tragic boat accident has claimed one life and left several others missing after a passenger boat carrying about 40 people capsized in Malamawa community, ’Yan Dutse district of Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The incident occurred on Sunday as the boat, reportedly conveying mostly women and children, was crossing a waterway in the area before it suddenly overturned.
Confirming the incident, the Jigawa State Police Command said one body had been recovered, while an intensive search-and-rescue operation was ongoing to locate the remaining passengers.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Lawan Adam, the command said security personnel, emergency responders and community volunteers had been mobilised to the scene to search for those still unaccounted for.
“The rescue operation is ongoing, and security personnel, alongside emergency responders and volunteers, are working tirelessly to search for those still missing,” the police spokesperson said.
The accident has thrown the Malamawa community into mourning, with distraught relatives and residents gathering along the riverbank as rescue teams continued combing the water for survivors and victims.
The Ringim Emirate Council also confirmed the incident in a separate statement, describing it as a tragic occurrence that resulted in loss of lives.
The council, however, noted that efforts were still underway to determine the exact number of casualties and survivors.
According to local sources, community volunteers immediately joined security agencies in the rescue effort, while traditional leaders appealed for calm and urged residents to cooperate with emergency officials.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to release a comprehensive casualty figure, as rescue operations continued.
Boat mishaps remain a recurring challenge in many riverine communities across northern Nigeria, particularly during the rainy season when rising water levels and strong currents increase the risk of accidents.
Safety experts have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of life jacket usage, routine inspection of boats and strict adherence to approved passenger capacity to reduce the frequency of such tragedies.
The Jigawa State Police Command assured residents that all available resources were being deployed to sustain the rescue operation until every victim had been accounted for.
Authorities also appealed to members of the public to remain calm, avoid circulating unverified information and allow rescue officials to carry out their work as investigations into the cause of the accident continue.
