One Dead, Three Injured as Tanker Explodes on Otedola Bridge

Lagos witnessed another tragic fuel tanker explosion on Tuesday night as a petrol-laden truck burst into flames on Otedola Bridge, killing one person and leaving three others critically injured.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident, revealing that emergency responders were swiftly deployed to the scene to contain the inferno and rescue victims.

“Three adult male victims with severe burns have been rescued and transferred to the Gbagada General Hospital burns unit, while the remains of an adult male were also recovered,” LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, stated.

Eyewitnesses reported that the explosion sent shockwaves across the area, with panicked motorists and residents scrambling for safety as flames engulfed nearby structures.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) disclosed that a church, a residential house, and several mechanic workshops under the bridge were affected.

In a post on X, LASTMA issued a warning to motorists attempting to navigate through the fire scene, describing such actions as “extremely hazardous.”

Emergency teams, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASEMA, and the police, worked through the night to contain the fire and clear the wreckage.

“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is currently attending to a fire resulting from a tanker accident outward Otedola Bridge, Omole, Lagos, at about 20:00 hours,” the agency stated.

Authorities have urged motorists to use alternative routes, as access to Otedola Bridge remains restricted. The cause of the explosion is yet to be determined, but investigations are ongoing.
