A fatal road accident involving a commercial tricycle and a Mercedes-Benz SUV has left one person dead along the Badagry Expressway, casting fresh concerns over traffic law violations in Lagos.
The tragic incident occurred over the weekend at Origan, Oko-Afo, when a Mercedes-Benz SUV, reportedly driving against traffic, rammed into an oncoming tricycle.
The SUV, identified by its customised plate number “OSUNFNKE,” was said to have been driving one-way from Ile-Epo towards Oko-Afo when it collided head-on with the tricycle with plate number MUS 716 QM.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), in a statement issued on Sunday by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the death of the tricycle operator, who sustained fatal injuries including a dislocated knee and died on the spot.
Eyewitnesses reported that the driver of the SUV immediately fled the scene, abandoning both the luxury vehicle and the victim.
Emergency responders from LASTMA, the Morogbo Division of the Nigeria Police Force, and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were quickly deployed to the scene.
The body of the deceased was transported to the General Hospital in Badagry, while both vehicles were impounded and handed over to the police for investigation and possible prosecution.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the act of driving against traffic, describing it as a “flagrant disregard for public safety and the rule of law.”

“This avoidable loss of life underscores the dangerous consequences of road users flouting traffic laws,” Bakare-Oki said. “Despite our relentless awareness campaigns and enforcement operations, some motorists still operate with reckless impunity.”
He further stressed that strict compliance with road signage and traffic directions remains non-negotiable, urging all drivers to adhere to rules to prevent similar tragedies.
While extending heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, Bakare-Oki reaffirmed LASTMA’s resolve to intensify road safety enforcement across the state and warned that lawless driving behaviour will be met with firm legal consequences.
LASTMA concluded its statement with a renewed call on the public to prioritize safety and responsibility while on the road.
