Ooni Reflects On Mockery, Personal Struggles Over Childbearing Delays

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has spoken about enduring years of emotional struggle, public scrutiny, and societal pressure over delays in fathering children after his ascension to the throne.

According to a statement issued on Saturday in Ile-Ife by the Director of Media and Public Affairs at the Ooni’s Palace, Moses Olafare, the monarch disclosed that he was once subjected to ridicule during that challenging phase of his life.

He made the remarks while hosting well-wishers who visited the palace to celebrate the birth of twin princes recently welcomed by one of his wives, Queen Mariam.

“I thank God today. There is nothing God cannot do,” the Ooni said, expressing gratitude for the new addition to the royal household.

Oba Ogunwusi further reflected on his unexpected life trajectory, noting that growing up he never imagined marrying multiple wives, but said circumstances and traditional expectations tied to the throne reshaped his personal life.

He explained that shortly after becoming the Ooni of Oduduwa, he faced significant pressure to quickly adjust to the marital responsibilities associated with the royal institution.

He also described his journey as one filled with unforeseen challenges and experiences that he described as mysterious.

The monarch recalled that efforts were once made to convince his former wife to move to Ile-Ife, with several prominent traditional rulers and influential figures reportedly intervening, although those attempts were unsuccessful.

Speaking further about his early adulthood, Oba Ogunwusi revealed that he became a father at the age of 19, describing it as one of the most demanding phases of his life.

He added that although he was initially overwhelmed, his mother played a crucial role in encouraging him to remain focused, disciplined, and hardworking.

He also expressed appreciation to the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, for her consistent support and encouragement over the years, describing her as a maternal figure who stood by him during difficult periods.

The Ooni thanked all the guests who visited the palace, noting that the mother of the newborn twins also extended her appreciation to those who offered prayers and support.

Earlier, the Chief Imam of Ifeland, Alhaji Abdulsemiu Abdulhammed, led members of the Muslim community and other well-wishers to the palace to celebrate with the monarch.

“We have come to rejoice with Kabiyesi. It is God who makes a person laugh when he laughs.

“God created everything, and childbirth comes only by His command. Kabiyesi, this is worthy of thanksgiving,” he said.

The celebration also drew members of the Ife Muslim Community, Hausa Community, traditional rulers from Ife North, the Giesi Ruling House, business leaders, captains of industry, and various cultural groups.
