Following the life sentence handed down to pro-Biafra leader Nnamdi Kanu, human rights lawyer Maxwell Opara has vehemently asserted that Kanu “has suffered the highest injustice in the entire world.”
Opara made the powerful declaration on Friday, the 21st of November, 2025, during an interview with Arise Television. He firmly maintained his position that Kanu is not a terrorist, contrary to the narrative being presented.
The lawyer’s comments come just one day after Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, convicted Kanu on all seven counts of terrorism filed against him and subsequently sentenced him to life imprisonment on Thursday, the 20th of November, 2025.
Reacting to the ruling, Opara praised the perception of the local populace, stating, “The people Southeast know that Nnamdi Kanu is not a criminal, he’s not a terrorist. I want to commend them for that.”
The lawyer appealed for nationwide support to overturn the ruling, urging: “I want to call all well-meaning Nigerians to join hands and wade into this matter so that the Court of Appeal will set aside this judgment.”

Opara also indicated that the international community is closely monitoring the case, sharing a recent development: “I have to tell you that as at yesterday when the judgment was given, there in America where our delegates were meeting with the US Congress, one of the Congressmen raised this issue and highlighted the kind of injustice Nnamdi Kanu has suffered in the hands of Nigeria as if the man is a Nigerian.”
Emphasizing the severity of the alleged injustice, Opara stated: “So, sometimes when we are talking, these people get more information than you. Nnamdi Kanu has suffered the highest injustice than any other person in the whole world.”
He concluded by citing a previous action by the state against Kanu: “He was in his house enjoying himself, the Federal Government who is prosecuting him went to his house unprovoked and killed 38 persons.”
