Opposition Lawmakers Applaud Fubara’s Compliance with Supreme Court Ruling

A coalition of opposition lawmakers has praised Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his unwavering adherence to the Supreme Court’s judgment on the Local Government Area elections, lauding his commitment to upholding the rule of law.

The lawmakers also commended Fubara’s decision to appoint Heads of Personnel to oversee the councils, in line with the court’s directive, pending fresh elections. They described this move as a clear demonstration of his democratic principles.

In a statement released on the 2nd of March, 2025, opposition spokesperson Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere applauded Fubara for maintaining a democratic stance despite pressures from loyalists of the former Governor, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. According to the coalition, the governor’s actions affirm his dedication to constitutional governance and legal precedence.

The lawmakers also addressed the controversy surrounding the 27 pro-Wike lawmakers who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2023. They reiterated that these lawmakers remain “constitutionally sacked” since the matter is still under review at the Appeal Court.

“The Court of Appeal and Supreme Court have yet to make pronouncements on their illegal decampment. Until then, their seats remain vacant,” Ugochinyere emphasized.

Furthermore, he revealed that the opposition coalition would formally address the nation after obtaining the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the Supreme Court judgment. This, he said, would enable them to outline their stance on other contentious political issues in the state.

Urging calm among residents, Ugochinyere reassured the public that the opposition remains committed to pursuing legal and peaceful avenues to ensure constitutional order is upheld.
