Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has commissioned 20 additional electric buses to expand the state’s Green Shuttle transport scheme, describing the move as another milestone in the government’s drive to build a modern, efficient and environmentally friendly transportation system.
The buses were inaugurated on Thursday at the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia, fulfilling the governor’s pledge to add another batch of vehicles after the launch of the first 20 electric buses on December 23, 2025.
Speaking during the ceremony, Otti said transportation remains a key driver of economic growth, stressing that improving mobility would create new opportunities for businesses and enhance the quality of life for residents.
He noted that the adoption of electric buses would significantly reduce operating costs and carbon emissions while supporting the state’s vision of a greener and more inclusive economy.
According to the governor, the newly commissioned buses feature larger cargo compartments and accessibility facilities for persons with disabilities (PWDs), ensuring that public transportation is available to all categories of passengers without discrimination.
Otti also announced tougher enforcement of traffic regulations across the state, warning that his administration would not tolerate reckless driving, traffic light violations or vehicle overloading.

To strengthen road safety, he disclosed that the Abia State Road Traffic and Safety Management Agency (ARTSMA) and the Harmonized Task Force would extend their operations until 10 p.m. daily, including weekends, to protect lives and property.
The governor commended the Interagency Transport Team led by Mr. Chinenye Mba Uzoukwu for its commitment to improving the state’s transport sector, adding that proper management of transport assets and staff welfare would remain priorities for his administration.
He warned that acts of sabotage and vandalism against government transport infrastructure would be thoroughly investigated, with offenders prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Otti also urged residents to fulfill their tax obligations, saying increased revenue would enable the government to sustain infrastructure development and bridge the gap between the state’s current realities and its long-term development goals.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a transport system that reflects the vision of a “New Abia” while creating greater economic opportunities for the people.
