Oyebanji Breaks 30-Year Record, Begins Second Term As Ekiti Governor

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, was sworn in for a second consecutive term on Friday, October 16, 2026, becoming the first governor to secure immediate re-election since the state was created in 1996.

The ceremony took place at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado-Ekiti, where the state Chief Judge, Justice Adekanye Ogunmoye, administered the oaths of office to Oyebanji and his deputy, Monisade Afuye.

Vice President Kashim Shettima represented President Bola Tinubu at the inauguration.

Oyebanji, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, won the June 20 governorship election with 319,224 votes. His closest challenger, Oluwole Oluyede of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), polled 40,543 votes, while Dare Bejide of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) received 12,872 votes.

The victory distinguishes Oyebanji from previous Ekiti governors, including Ayodele Fayose and Kayode Fayemi, who each served two separate terms but did not win consecutive elections.

Oyebanji first assumed office on October 16, 2022. His new four-year tenure is expected to run until October 2030.

For the second term, the state government has prioritised healthcare, electricity, road infrastructure, water supply, agriculture and human capital development, alongside rural development and economic opportunities.

The administration’s challenge will be to translate these priorities into measurable improvements in public services and residents’ living standards.
