Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pa Ayo Adebanjo, a prominent leader of Afenifere, who passed away on Friday at the age of 96.
In a press release, on Monday February 17 by the Vice President’s media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima celebrated Pa Adebanjo as a steadfast advocate for a more equitable and progressive Nigeria.
Describing Pa Adebanjo’s life as a testament to dedication, Shettima highlighted the late leader’s immense contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey.
He pointed to Pa Adebanjo’s pivotal role as Organising Secretary of the Action Group and his leadership in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) during the military era.
“We have not just lost a leader; we have lost an institution,” Shettima remarked, underscoring that Pa Adebanjo’s principled voice was a constant force until his final days, tirelessly advocating for Nigeria’s growth.
The Vice President further described him as a “living bridge” connecting the nation to its foundational struggles for democracy, calling Pa Adebanjo one of the greatest titans in Nigeria’s political history.

Shettima reflected on the cultural significance of the passing, stating, “In African tradition, when such an elderly person transitions, a vital chapter of our history departs with them.”
Extending his condolences to the Adebanjo family, especially Pa Adebanjo’s wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, Shettima offered prayers for strength, hoping they would find the fortitude to bear this tremendous loss.
Pa Adebanjo passed away peacefully at his Lekki residence in Lagos State on Friday, February 14, 2025. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
