The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has mourned the passing of its founder, Chief Edwin Clark, describing his death as the fall of a “mighty Iroko tree.”
Clark, a revered elder statesman and leader of the Niger Delta, passed away peacefully in Abuja on Monday evening, February 17, 2025, at the age of 97.
In a statement on Tuesday, February 18, PANDEF’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiuwevbi Ominimini, announced his death on behalf of the Clark-Fuludu-Bakederemo family and PANDEF’s National Chairman, Ambassador Dr. Godknows Igali.
“Pa Clark was indeed a towering figure in Nigeria, known for his tireless advocacy for justice and human rights,” the statement read, highlighting his 75 years of service in public life.
A distinguished lawyer, politician, and activist, Clark was a prominent leader of the South-South region and the Ijaw ethnic group.
He co-led the South and Middle Belt Leaders Forum, fighting relentlessly for justice, equality, and the rights of marginalised communities.
“His brilliant mind and generous spirit will continue to inspire future generations to strive for a more just and compassionate society,” PANDEF stated.
Beyond politics, Clark contributed significantly to education and community development, founding several institutions.
“His death, coming just months before his 98th birthday, marks the end of an era for the Niger Delta and Nigeria”.

Drawing from the Bible, PANDEF found solace in Acts 13:36: “After he had served the purpose of God in his generation, he fell asleep and was allowed to rest.”
His passing follows that of his longtime ally, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, further underscoring the departure of a generation of elder statesmen.
PANDEF said funeral arrangements would be announced in due course.
