There is panic in Edo State following the Monday decision of the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, to reserve its ruling on Governor Godwin Obaseki’s certificate forgery case.
The court reserved judgment in the appeal filed by the All Progressives Congress and its chieftain, Williams Edobor, challenging the certificate which Obaseki presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission to contest the 2020 Edo State governorship election.
After listening to the argument of both parties, a three-man panel of justices of the appellate court reserved ruling on the matter.
A Federal High Court in Abuja had two months ago dismissed the certificate forgery case against Governor Obaseki.
During the argument before the position of the court, APC and its chieftain argued that at the trial court, issues of forgery and falsification were raised but that the court only determined the issue of forgery and left out that of falsification.
The APC counsel, Akin Olujimi, reiterated that Obaseki submitted a false certificate to INEC before the election.
While responding, counsel to the governor contested that the pleading of the appellant was on the fact that he did not graduate from the University of Ibadan in 1979, neither did he resign from Afri Investment Limited.
Recall that the alleged certificate forgery suit against Obaseki was dismissed by Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court in Abuja on January 9.
According to the judge the evidence of the plaintiff on the matter was not good enough to prove the allegation against the governor.
