Ghana have suffered a major setback ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign after midfielder Thomas Partey lost his appeal to gain entry into Canada, effectively ruling him out of participation in the tournament.
Partey was reportedly denied entry into Canada after being refused a visa by Canadian authorities. In a last-ditch effort to reverse the decision, his legal team launched an appeal before the Federal Court in Ottawa.
However, the appeal was dismissed, leaving the former Arsenal midfielder unable to join the Ghana national football team squad for the competition.
The visa refusal comes amid rape charges filed against Partey in the United Kingdom. The Ghana international has consistently denied the allegations and has also maintained his innocence during court proceedings.

The development represents a significant blow for Ghana, who were hoping to rely on Partey’s experience and leadership as they prepare for crucial matches at the World Cup.
With the midfielder now unavailable, Ghana’s coaching staff will be forced to adjust their plans as the Black Stars seek to make an impact on football’s biggest stage.
Neither Partey nor the Ghana Football Association had immediately issued a detailed response following the dismissal of the appeal. The decision means the 33-year-old’s World Cup hopes have been put on hold while his legal situation continues to unfold in the United Kingdom.
