Passengers Injured As BRT Bus Catches Fire In Lagos

Several passengers were injured on Wednesday morning after a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus caught fire while moving along Ikorodu Road in Lagos.

The incident happened on the inward Majidun stretch of the road as the bus was travelling along the designated BRT lane.

According to reports, the fire suddenly broke out from the engine compartment while the vehicle was still in motion.

Passengers quickly rushed to exit the bus as soon as the flames appeared, managing to escape before the fire spread further.

However, in the rush to get out, some commuters sustained injuries, while a few were briefly trapped during the evacuation.

Although the exact number of injured passengers has not yet been confirmed, authorities said no deaths were recorded.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic and frightening.

One of the passengers who spoke to First Daily correspondent on condition of anonymity said the incident happened suddenly.

“It was like a scene from a horror movie. The bus was moving when flames suddenly started coming out from the engine area. Everyone began shouting and trying to get out,” she said.

The cause of the fire has not been officially determined, though some observers believe it may have been triggered by a mechanical fault.

Another passenger who escaped unhurt said the incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of public transportation in the state.

Meanwhile, officials from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the bus caught fire at about 6:30 a.m.

Shakiru Amodu of the fire service said the agency received an emergency call around 6:48 a.m., and firefighters arrived at the scene by 7:01 a.m.

He added that the incident occurred near the Majidun Boma filling station and that firefighters were able to successfully bring the blaze under control.
