Senior Pastor of Daystar Christian Centre, Pastor Sam Adeyemi, has strongly criticised the lack of empathy and compassion among some Nigerian political leaders, accusing them of being disconnected from the everyday struggles of ordinary citizens.

Speaking during a live appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on Thursday, Adeyemi said many leaders are more concerned with holding onto political power than addressing the deep-rooted challenges faced by the poor.

“The fear of losing power drives many leaders to defect between political parties,” he said. “Some have clearly lost touch with the plight of the poor; they lack empathy and compassion.”

He stressed the need to build a political environment where leaders are enabled to make thoughtful, people-centred decisions, adding that without empathy, good governance remains elusive.

Adeyemi also condemned the entrenched culture of political “godfatherism,” stating that the dominance of power brokers over electoral outcomes undermines democracy and breeds corruption.

“This system breeds leaders who become corrupt and forget the people they are meant to serve,” he said.

Citing former President Olusegun Obasanjo as a leader who rejected divisive ethnic politics, Adeyemi advocated for national unity over tribal sentiment. He warned against the dangers of ethnic blame narratives, noting an instance where an expatriate expressed concern over internal Villa gossip linking the North to national instability.

Adeyemi concluded by urging political actors to shift their focus from self-preservation to nation-building, stressing that Nigeria’s future depends on a renewed commitment to ethical leadership and public service.

“This country needs leaders who understand the people’s pain and are ready to act with compassion, not fear,” he added.
