Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has taken a swipe at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the state of the Nigerian economy, accusing him of misleading the public with distorted economic statistics while millions of citizens face worsening hunger.
In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday , Obi recalled a statement made by Tinubu in November 2022 during a campaign rally in Delta State, where the then All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate dismissed data-driven discussions on the economy and declared:
“Na statistics we go chop? All I want is to put food on the table of Nigerians.”
Nearly two years into his administration, Obi said Tinubu has failed to fulfil that promise, as Nigeria is now ranked among the hungriest nations globally, with millions unable to afford basic meals.
“President Tinubu is now overfeeding Nigerians with wrong statistics — from incorrect unemployment figures to inflation and GDP rebasing — all to put a positive spin on our deteriorating economic and household conditions,” Obi wrote.

He warned that governance must be grounded in truth, empathy, and competence, not propaganda or political spin.
“Governance is not rocket science. It’s not a gamble. Like I have always reiterated, it requires sincerity of purpose, character, competence, capacity, and compassion,” he stated.
Reaffirming his vision for a better Nigeria, Obi concluded his post with his campaign slogan: “A new Nigeria is POssible.”
His comments come amid growing public discontent over high food prices, inflation, and rising poverty levels, as opposition voices continue to challenge the administration’s handling of the economy.
