Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has donated ₦10 million towards the rehabilitation of St. Anthony’s Hospital, Mgbowo, in Enugu State, describing the intervention as a step towards preserving lives and restoring dignity in underserved communities.
Obi disclosed the donation in a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, following a visit to the hospital after attending a symposium marking the 70th birthday of renowned economist, Professor Pat Utomi.
St. Anthony’s Hospital, now under the Catholic Diocese of Awgu after being inherited from the former Enugu Diocese, was once a major healthcare provider serving Mgbowo and several neighbouring communities.
However, years of neglect have left the facility severely dilapidated, despite remaining the only functional health institution available to residents of the area.
According to Obi, an assessment of the hospital’s infrastructure revealed extensive decay requiring significant intervention.

While announcing the ₦10 million donation, he assured the management of continued monthly support, noting that the task of restoring the hospital could not be borne by one individual alone.
He also commended the role of missionary organisations—both Christian and Muslim—in providing critical social services, stressing that their contributions help bridge gaps in public service delivery and support governments in meeting basic societal needs.
Obi described the rehabilitation effort as a collective responsibility, emphasising that supporting such institutions goes beyond infrastructure renewal to safeguarding human life and dignity. He further called on well-meaning Nigerians to assist in rescuing the hospital from further decline.
The intervention has drawn public attention to the state of healthcare infrastructure in rural communities and renewed conversations around citizen-led support for essential social services.
