Peter Obi Mourns Slain Lawyer, Demands Justice, Decries Nigeria’s Deepening Insecurity

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned the abduction and brutal murder of Princess Nwamaka Mediatrix Chigbo, a lawyer and elder sister of Maureen Chigbo, publisher of Realnews Online Magazine and immediate past president of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP).

Obi disclosed in a post on his X handle on Saturday that he paid a condolence visit earlier in the day to Maureen Chigbo in Abuja, describing the loss as tragic and deeply painful.

According to Obi, Princess Nwamaka, a practicing lawyer and advocate for a better Nigerian society, had travelled home for the Christmas holidays but returned to Abuja to attend a court case. After attending evening Mass, she was abducted on her way home and later murdered. She died on Monday, January 6, 2026.

“This is heartbreaking to write, especially given the circumstances surrounding her death,” Obi said, noting that the killing underscores the worsening state of insecurity across the country.

He called on the police and other security agencies to act swiftly in apprehending those responsible for the crime and ensuring they are brought to justice, stressing that impunity must not be allowed to thrive.

Obi also urged the government to treat the incident as a wake-up call, emphasizing that the protection of lives and property should take precedence over politics and propaganda.

“Ensuring the security of citizens is the primary duty of any government, and it is within our reach,” he stated, adding that the tragic killing of Princess Nwamaka reflects the urgent need for decisive action against insecurity.

As tributes continue to pour in, Obi expressed solidarity with the bereaved family and reiterated his long-standing call for a safer Nigeria, concluding that “a new Nigeria is possible.”
