The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged to serve only one term if elected president, insisting that four years would be enough to redirect Nigeria and set the country on a better path.
Obi made the statement on Thursday during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show, where he argued that Nigeria did not need decades of leadership to overcome its current challenges.
“You do not need 100 years to steer this nation in the right direction,” Obi said.
According to the former Anambra State governor, Nigeria is currently heading in the wrong direction and his priority would be to reverse the trend and restore the country to the right path.
“Nigeria is heading in the wrong direction today. I just need to reverse course and put it back on track,” he said.

Obi said he was not desperate to remain in office beyond his proposed first term, arguing that Nigerians would be able to assess his performance within four years.
“I am not desperate. In four years, Nigerians will see the difference,” he said.
The NDC candidate also cited his tenure as governor of Anambra State as evidence of what he could achieve within a limited period.
“I transformed Anambra in four years,” Obi said.
His comments come as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with candidates expected to present their positions on governance, economic development, security and the duration of their proposed administrations.
Obi has previously campaigned on reducing government expenditure, prioritising existing infrastructure and strengthening security, while arguing that public resources should be directed towards productive sectors that improve citizens’ welfare.
