The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, alongside his wife, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, spearheaded the celebrations marking the return of the Lagos Fanti Carnival, a lively exhibition of Afro-Brazilian culture and heritage.
The Lagos Fanti Carnival, which has its origins in the 19th-century history of Afro-Brazilian returnees, made a vibrant comeback, showcasing the rich multicultural heritage of Lagos.
With its dazzling costumes, traditional music, and electrifying performances, this festival has become one of Nigeria’s most celebrated cultural events.
Over the years, the carnival has transformed into a powerful emblem of unity and identity.
This year’s event was coordinated by the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, in partnership with the Brazilian Descendants Association. It united numerous community groups, each showcasing their distinct cultures, languages, and histories through vibrant displays of dance, attire, and artistry.
Thousands of spectators lined the streets, cheering as dancers, drummers, masquerades, and floats brought movement and melody to the city’s historic core.

They were joined by Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat and his wife, Oluremi Hamzat, along with a host of dignitaries, cultural leaders, and public officials at the Remembrance Arcade, Tafawa Balewa Square, the starting point of the grand cultural parade.
Popular Afrobeat singer Adekunle Gold made a surprise appearance. While DJ Spinall thrilled the audience with an electrifying set that kept the energy levels high.
The event seeks to inspire younger generations and reinforce the identity of Lagos by showcasing the significant contributions of Afro-Brazilian communities to the development of Lagos.
The Lagos State Government disclosed that the carnival also plays a role in boosting tourism and promoting the creative economy.
