Niger State Police Command has disclosed that efforts are ongoing to determine how a suspected military unexploded missile ended up in Zugurma community of Mashegu local government area of the state.
Recall the device, suspected to be a military missile, was found by farmers in a forest on Monday January 5, 2026.
In a statement cited by First Daily correspondent on Wednesday, the Commissioner of Police, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, through the state Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, explained that the Police EOD-CBRN team rendered the device safe and recovered it to custody, before its onward movement to the State Police Headquarters, Minna.
He said, ” On 5th January, 2026 at about 2pm, reports indicated that some locals in Zugurma community in Mashegu LGA sighted an object suspected to be a missile in the forest. The Police operatives of the Division moved to the scene and cordoned the area for safety.

“On 6th January, 2026 at about 6am, the EOD-CBRN team led by CSP Mohammed Mamun mobilised to the location, where the Police operatives of the Division and the community members led the team to the scene.
“The device was identified as a UXO missile or military unexploded ordinance, the source of which is yet unknown. Meanwhile, further investigation is ongoing and other developments will be made public.”
The CP then urged members of the public to remain calm as all security agencies are working assiduously and making efforts to ensure that normalcy is restored in the identified areas of concern.
