Defending champions Senegal kicked off their CHAN 2024 campaign with a narrow 1–0 win over Nigeria in a high-intensity Group D encounter at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar.
The tightly contested match lived up to expectations as two of Africa’s football powerhouses battled for early dominance in the tournament, which features players drawn exclusively from domestic leagues.
The breakthrough came in the 75th minute when Moctar Koïté surged down the right flank on a quick counter-attack and delivered a precise low cross into the Nigerian box. Christian Gomis timed his run perfectly and calmly finished with his left foot to give Senegal the lead.
Despite a late surge from the home-based Super Eagles—including a close effort by Vincent Temitope—Nigeria could not find an equaliser.
Senegal, who lifted the 2022 CHAN title in Algeria, showed their composure early in the match but were tested by Nigeria’s pressing game. Goalkeeper Marc Diouf stood firm, while Daouda Ba and Koïté threatened Nigeria’s defence with long-range attempts.

Reacting after the game, Nigeria’s head coach, Éric Chelle, remained positive: “We’ll take each game as it comes,” he said, with matches against Congo and Sudan still ahead in the group.
Senegal’s coach, Souleymane Diallo, reiterated his side’s intent: “We’re not here to defend a trophy; we’re here to win a new one,” he said, dismissing any suggestion of pressure from their titleholder status.
The win marks Senegal’s sixth 1–0 victory in CHAN history and extends their unbeaten run against West African rivals in the competition—underscoring their reputation for defensive discipline and clinical execution.
The Group D opener set the tone for what promises to be a fiercely competitive tournament, as CHAN 2024 continues to showcase top talent from across Africa’s domestic football scene.
