Police Arrest Man Who Offered N1.5m Bribe to Free Kidnapper

Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have arrested a 40-year-old man, Yahaya Saleh, for allegedly attempting to bribe investigators with N1.5 million in a desperate effort to secure the release of a suspected kidnapper currently in custody.

The arrest was confirmed in a statement on Wednesday by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, who said the incident occurred during an ongoing investigation into a notorious kidnapping syndicate operating across the FCT and neighbouring states.

According to the statement, Saleh approached members of the Scorpion Squad — the special unit handling the case — and offered them the cash in a bid to derail the investigation.

“Yahaya Saleh approached the investigators and offered the bribe as an inducement to compromise the case and unlawfully release one of the arrested suspects,” the statement read.

The officers, however, refused the offer and immediately initiated legal action against Saleh, leading to his arrest.

“Demonstrating professionalism, integrity, and unwavering commitment to justice, the officers promptly declined the offer and initiated necessary legal procedures,” Adeh added.

FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao Adewale, lauded the team’s ethical conduct, describing it as a reaffirmation of the command’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption.

He assured the public that the command remains committed to dismantling criminal networks and ensuring that justice prevails.

Further investigations are ongoing to apprehend other members of the kidnapping ring.
