Police Arrest Officer Seen Assaulting Uber Driver in Viral Video

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested Inspector Obic Modestus, the officer captured on video violently assaulting an Uber driver, following widespread outrage on social media.

The incident, which surfaced online via X user @dammiedammie35, showed Modestus repeatedly beating the driver, drawing condemnation from Nigerians who described the act as inhumane and unacceptable.

“This is someone’s father they’re beating like an animal,” the user captioned the video, urging people to spread the footage.

Responding to the public outcry on Monday, the command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the officer’s arrest and disciplinary processing.

“The Police Officer, Inspector Obic Modestus, has been summoned by the Complaint Response Unit. He will be handed over to the Provost Department for appropriate disciplinary measures,” Hundeyin stated.

He added that the Lagos Police Command, under the leadership of CP Owohunwa Olatunji, maintains zero tolerance for unprofessional conduct and mistreatment of citizens.

The video, which went viral over the weekend, is the latest in a series of documented incidents raising concerns about police brutality and accountability in Nigeria.

The Uber driver’s identity and medical condition have not been disclosed at the time of this report.

The police have yet to state whether compensation or support will be provided to the victim.

Efforts to reach Inspector Modestus or his legal representatives for comment were unsuccessful as of press time.
