The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Adewale Arojah for allegedly impersonating a popular prophet on Facebook and defrauding unsuspecting victims of more than N18m.
Arojah, who was identified by the police as the son of a prophet, allegedly created a Facebook account in the name of renowned cleric, Prophet Dr Muyiwa Akogun, using the platform to offer fake prophecies and prayer services to people seeking spiritual assistance.
The arrest followed a complaint filed on October 3, 2026, by Akogun, who reportedly alerted the police after members of the public began raising concerns about fraudulent activities being carried out through a duplicated Facebook profile bearing his identity.
According to the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, on Thursday, operatives attached to the Ilaro Division launched an intelligence-led investigation after receiving the complaint.
The police said sustained technological monitoring and intelligence gathering eventually led detectives to a village in Ajegunle, along the Ilaro/Ibogun axis, where the suspect was apprehended.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to impersonating Akogun on Facebook.
Babaseyi said the suspect admitted using the cleric’s identity to issue fake prophecies and provide purported prayer services to vulnerable individuals in Nigeria and abroad.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect systematically targeted victims seeking spiritual assistance on the said prophet’s Facebook page, gained their trust and swindled them of funds amounting to over ₦18 million,” the police said.
The suspect has subsequently been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.
The police said the ongoing investigation would determine the full extent of the alleged fraud, establish whether other individuals were involved and pave the way for possible prosecution.
The command described the arrest as part of its efforts to combat online fraud and identity theft in Ogun State.
The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, commended the Ilaro operatives for their vigilance and swift response, while reaffirming the command’s commitment to protecting residents from both digital and physical threats.
The police also urged members of the public to exercise caution and conduct proper checks before engaging religious leaders or public figures through social media platforms.
