Police Arrest Suspected Armed Robber, Recover Firearm In Ondo

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a suspected armed robber and recovered a locally made pistol during an intelligence-led operation in Akure, the state capital.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Jimoh, the arrest was carried out under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, as part of ongoing efforts to combat violent crimes and illegal possession of firearms across the state.

The police said the operation followed credible intelligence received in May 2026 concerning the alleged criminal activities of one Idowu Babayemi of Abusoro Street, Akure, who was reportedly linked to suspected armed robbery incidents within the area.

Acting on the intelligence, operatives of the command reportedly placed the suspect under discreet surveillance in a bid to prevent further criminal activities and enhance public safety.

The statement further disclosed that the suspect was intercepted by officers on routine patrol along the Onimalu area of Akure on May 7, 2026.

A search conducted on him allegedly led to the recovery of a locally made pistol concealed in his possession.

The Command described the arrest as another major breakthrough in its sustained campaign against armed robbery, illegal arms proliferation and other forms of criminality in the state.

Commending the officers involved in the operation, CP Lawal praised their professionalism, vigilance and commitment to duty, while reiterating the Command’s determination to intensify operations against criminal elements threatening the peace and security of Ondo State.

The Commissioner also expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for his continued support and commitment to strengthening intelligence-based policing and tactical operations across police commands nationwide.

Police said investigations into the matter are ongoing and that the suspect would be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.

The Command further urged residents to continue supporting the police with timely and credible information, assuring the public of its commitment to protecting lives and property throughout Ondo State.
