The Ondo State Police Command has dismantled a suspected human trafficking syndicate operating in the state, rescuing a 21-year-old woman who was lured abroad and forced into sexual exploitation.
Police confirmed that the victim, identified as Akinwunmi Faith, was trafficked to Côte d’Ivoire under false promises of legitimate employment. Instead, she was coerced into prostitution and subjected to harsh and degrading conditions.
This was contained in a statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Dsp Abayomi Jimoh, on Monday.
According to the statement, the case came to light on April 13, 2026, when the victim’s mother reported her disappearance at the Okitipupa Division in Okitipupa.
It was gathered that three suspects allegedly orchestrated the trafficking operation, deceiving the victim with claims she would work as a supermarket salesgirl.
Police investigations revealed that once in Côte d’Ivoire, the victim was forced into sex work and allegedly administered unknown substances believed to be used for control and exploitation.
In a dramatic escape on April 6, the victim fled the brothel, trekking through a bush path to reach safety in a nearby town.
She later contacted her family, who facilitated her return to Nigeria on April 11.
Upon arrival, she was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment, suffering from both physical injuries and psychological trauma.
Acting on intelligence, police operatives arrested two suspects linked to the syndicate, while a third remains at large.

The police say efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fugitive and dismantle the broader network behind the operation.
The Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, condemned the crime, describing it as a grave violation of human dignity. He assured the public that all perpetrators would be brought to justice.
The Command also urged parents and guardians to carefully verify overseas job offers and remain alert to trafficking risks.
Members of the public were encouraged to support law enforcement by providing credible information to help combat human trafficking.
Police reiterated their commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and intensifying efforts against organised criminal networks involved in exploitation.
