Police foil attempt by suspects to escape from cell in Bayelsa

ODAHIEKWU OGUNDE, Yenagoa

An attempt by two suspects in police detention in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, to escape from the cell were on Sunday  foiled by the operatives.

It was learnt that the two persons, a murder and an armed robbery suspects, detained in a police cell  pretended they were seriously ill and demanded to be taken to hospital for medical attention.

It was also learnt that as the suspects were released from the cell and taken by an unnamed police guard to the hospital, they attempted to escape.

But luck reportedly ran out on them when the guard operative raised the alarm that drew the attention of other guards at the station.

They were said to have been caught after a chase by operatives on duty.

Spokesman for the command, Asinim Butswat, confirmed the incident.

He said it was a case of two detained suspects in a case of attempted murder and armed robbery who pretended to be sick.

He said while the police officer on duty was trying to take them to the hospital for medical treatment, they bolted in an attempt to escape. 

Butswat, a Superintendent of Police, said the officer raised the alarm and other guard duty officers responded and they arrested the suspects. 

He said the suspects were currently undergoing treatment at the Police Clinic, Yenagoa.
