A Police Inspector, identified as Bassey Asuquo, reportedly took his own life while on special duty in Sarkin-Pawa, Munya Local Government Area of Niger state.
According to intelligence sources quoted by security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagama Makama, on Thursday, the incident occurred on Wednesday, at about 1:50 a.m.
Asuquo was a member of the 28 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Umuahia, Abia State, deployed to the area for special assignment.
Reports indicated that the officer had been behaving abnormally before taking his own life.
As a precautionary measure, his Unit Commander reportedly directed that Inspector Asuquo’s rifle be retrieved and kept in the armoury at the Sarkin-Pawa Police Division.

However, further investigation revealed that the deceased officer gained access to a rifle belonging to another officer who was asleep at the time.
Asuquo allegedly took the weapon and fatally shot himself in the head.
His remains have been deposited at the General Hospital Sarkin-Pawa, while Inspector Titus Bulus has been taken into custody for questioning as part of an ongoing investigation.
