British-Nigerian singer and songwriter Talay Riley has died after a fatal stabbing in East London, as police launch a murder investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Talay, born Mark Yinka Orabiyi, was reportedly attacked on Friday morning along Pankhurst Avenue in the Silvertown area of London. Emergency responders rushed to the scene following the incident, which occurred around 9 a.m., but efforts to save the 35-year-old musician were unsuccessful.
Authorities have since confirmed that specialist homicide detectives are leading an investigation into the killing.
In a statement released by his family, they expressed profound grief over the loss of the acclaimed songwriter and artist.
“It is with overwhelming sadness that we confirm that Mark ‘Yinka’ Orabiyi, professionally known as Talay Riley, passed away yesterday morning,” the statement read.
The family described Talay as a gifted musician whose warmth, generosity and vibrant personality touched countless lives. They also thanked supporters for the outpouring of condolences and messages received since news of his death emerged.
Talay enjoyed a successful career in the music industry spanning more than a decade. He secured a publishing deal at just 18 years old and later signed with Jive/Sony Records after gaining wider recognition through a collaboration on a 2009 single by British rapper Chip.
Beyond his solo work, Talay established himself as a respected songwriter, contributing to projects that earned international recognition and commercial success.

His younger brother, renowned music producer Scribz Riley, paid an emotional tribute on social media, describing Talay as a mentor, inspiration and a source of light to many people.
“My heart is shattered. This doesn’t feel real,” Scribz wrote. “Just before he went to sleep we spoke about the future, staying positive and about everything we still had left to do. I never imagined that would be our last conversation.”
He added that Talay’s kindness, talent and selflessness left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him, saying his legacy would continue through his music and the lives he touched.
The singer’s death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from across the entertainment industry. Among those mourning him are fellow British artists Stormzy and Craig David, who publicly honoured his memory and contributions to music.
Police investigations into the killing remain ongoing, with authorities appealing for information that could assist detectives in identifying those responsible.
