The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF–NCCC) has intensified efforts to combat the rising threat of cybercrime in the country with a one-day Cybercrime Awareness Campaign held in Abuja.
The campaign, which attracted over 3,000 participants from schools, government institutions, private organisations, digital platforms, and security agencies, was aimed at promoting digital literacy, responsible online behaviour, and public resilience against cyber threats.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the event marked a major step in the Police’s drive to enhance national cybersecurity awareness and safeguard citizens from online fraud, identity theft, financial scams, and cyberbullying.
Speaking at the event, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who was represented by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Sadiq Abubakar, reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to ensuring a safe and secure digital environment for all Nigerians.
“The Nigeria Police remains steadfast in its mission to create a safer digital space for Nigerians by strengthening our capacity for cybercrime prevention, investigation, and enforcement,” Egbetokun stated.
In his welcome address, the Director of the NPF–NCCC, CP Uche Henry Ifeanyi, commended partners and stakeholders for their continuous collaboration in advancing the country’s cybersecurity goals. He stressed that collective effort and public awareness were essential in tackling the growing menace of cybercrime.
“The fight against cybercrime requires a collective national effort. In today’s digital era, every Nigerian must become not just a user, but a guardian of their own cybersecurity,” he said.

He further highlighted the need for sustained public education and technological investment to build a safer online space. “This campaign is part of our mandate to make citizens more aware and resilient to online threats. We will continue to expand our cyber education initiatives, enhance reporting mechanisms, and strengthen enforcement capacity,” Henry added.
The event featured an awareness walk, distribution of sensitisation materials, and a musical segment aimed at engaging participants while reinforcing the campaign’s message in a lively and interactive manner.
The NPF–NCCC, established as a specialised unit under the Nigeria Police Force, works in collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to prevent, investigate, and prosecute cyber-related crimes.
According to data from the NCC, Nigeria loses billions of naira annually to various forms of cybercrime, including phishing, ransomware, and online financial fraud schemes.
The NPF–NCCC said it would continue to roll out initiatives focused on public sensitisation, inter-agency collaboration, and the training of cyber investigators across police commands nationwide to strengthen the country’s digital resilience.
