Six lawmakers of the Zamfara State House of Assembly elected on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform have officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), dealing a significant blow to the opposition party in the state.
The lawmakers, who had been operating as a suspended faction for nearly two years, formally submitted their defection letters on Thursday, December 25, 2025, in Gusau, the state capital.
They cited prolonged suspension, alleged constitutional breaches by the recognized House majority, and persistent internal crises within the PDP as reasons for leaving.
The defectors are:
• Hon. Bashar Aliyu Gummi (Gummi I)
• Hon. Nasiru Abdullahi Maru (Maru North)
• Hon. Bashir Bello (Bungudu West)

• Hon. Amiru Ahmad Keta (Tsafe West)
• Hon. Muktar Nasir Kaura (Kaura North)
• Barr. Bashir Abubakar Masama (Bukkuyum North)
In a statement to reporters, the lawmakers said joining the APC would provide a more stable platform to represent their constituents and serve effectively, following years of marginalization within the PDP.
Political observers note that the defection weakens the PDP’s presence in Zamfara and strengthens the APC’s dominance in the state, a development that could influence the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The PDP in Zamfara has not yet issued an official response to the latest wave of defections.
