President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Romuald Wadagni, the President-elect of the Republic of Benin, following his victory in the presidential election held on April 12, 2026.
Wadagni, who currently serves as Benin’s Minister of Finance, reportedly secured an overwhelming majority of votes in the closely watched election, marking a major political transition in the neighbouring West African country.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the outcome as a reflection of the confidence the Beninese people have in Wadagni’s leadership credentials and public service record.
Tinubu noted that Nigeria and the Republic of Benin share long-standing historical, cultural, and diplomatic ties, expressing optimism that both countries will deepen cooperation under the incoming administration.

He pledged Nigeria’s readiness to work closely with the President-elect to strengthen bilateral relations, enhance regional security, and promote economic growth within the ECOWAS sub-region and the African Union.
According to the statement, Tinubu commended the people and government of Benin Republic for conducting a peaceful and credible electoral process, describing the transition as a significant milestone in the country’s democratic journey.
The President also wished Wadagni success as he prepares to assume office, expressing confidence in continued collaboration between both nations.
