Pro-Biafra Coalition Plans ‘One Million March’ In Aba For Kanu

A coalition of pro-Biafra supporters has announced plans to stage a large protest in southeastern Nigeria, calling for the release of detained separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu.

The group, operating under the banner of the Coalition of Lovers of Freedom, said it is organising what it described as a “One Million March” scheduled to take place on March 12, 2026, in Aba.

According to a flyer circulating on social media, the organisers are urging supporters across the region and beyond to converge on the commercial city to peacefully demand Kanu’s freedom.

The message on the flyer reads: “1 Million March for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s Freedom – Aba – 12th March 2026.”

It also calls on supporters to mobilise in large numbers for what organisers described as a major demonstration.

“This is the mother of all marches. Wherever you are, head to Aba on 12th March 2026 and march peacefully for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Come one, come all,” the statement on the flyer said.

Kanu is the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a group advocating for the creation of an independent Biafra state.

He has been in the custody of the Nigerian government since 2021 after being rearrested and returned to the country under controversial circumstances.

His continued detention has remained a focal point of agitation among supporters of the pro-Biafra movement, particularly across Nigeria’s South-East region.

Over the past few years, calls for his release have triggered protests, demonstrations and the enforcement of controversial sit-at-home orders in several southeastern states.

Security agencies in Nigeria have previously warned against unlawful gatherings linked to pro-Biafra activities, citing concerns over public safety and security.

As of the time of reporting, it remains unclear whether authorities will permit the planned march in Aba or move to prevent the gathering.

Observers say the planned protest could test the response of security agencies and the willingness of organisers and participants to maintain a peaceful demonstration amid heightened sensitivities surrounding the pro-Biafra movement.
