Protesters Storm Abuja Court, Demand Sowore’s Immediate Release

Scores of Nigerian youths on Tuesday converged on the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja, demanding the immediate release of the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore.

The protesters, who arrived at the court ahead of the commencement of proceedings in Sowore’s case, chanted solidarity songs and carried placards calling for his freedom.

Videos from the court premises showed demonstrators singing, “Free Sowore now. We want a better Nigeria,” as they gathered peacefully outside the courthouse.

Some of the protesters also appealed to security personnel stationed at the entrance of the court to support the cause for a better Nigeria.

“We are looking for a better Nigeria that your children will also enjoy,” they told the officers.

Sowore is currently being held at the Kuje Correctional Centre following an earlier court order remanding him in custody.

The Federal High Court had fixed June 30, 2026, to rule on an application filed by the activist seeking the restoration of his bail and the setting aside of the bench warrant earlier issued against him.

Justice Mohammed Umar adjourned the matter after counsel to both parties adopted their respective processes on the application.

The court is expected to deliver its ruling later on Tuesday amid heightened public interest and growing calls from supporters for Sowore’s release.
