Rainstorm Wreaks Havoc Across Lagos, Causes Road Blockages, Streetlight Failures

A powerful overnight rainstorm caused widespread disruption across Lagos on Wednesday morning, as fallen trees and damaged infrastructure brought traffic to a crawl in several areas of the city.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the storm, which swept through the city late Tuesday night, toppled multiple trees and streetlights, impacting key routes including Ikorodu and parts of Victoria Island.

In a statement shared via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, LASTMA reported that vehicular movement was partially obstructed at Asolo, inward Majidun, in the Ikorodu axis.

A large tree had fallen across a section of the road, forcing drivers to navigate with caution.

“Our officers are at the scene monitoring the situation,” the post read. “Please, drive with caution on approach.”

In another incident, a tree collapsed near the busy Bourdillon-Alexandra roundabout corridor, completely blocking access and prompting a traffic diversion.

LASTMA confirmed that traffic was being rerouted through alternative routes while clearance operations were underway.

Further reports confirmed a second tree fall along Alexandra, heading toward Parkview Estate.

This particular obstruction consumed half the width of the road, causing further slowdowns during the early morning rush.

Authorities also noted that three streetlights were brought down at Osborne.

Thankfully, this particular damage had no immediate impact on traffic flow as of 7:38 a.m., though officials remained on site to monitor the situation.

The Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) has been contacted to assist in clearing the fallen trees.

Motorists are urged to exercise patience and drive cautiously as clean-up efforts continue throughout the day. No injuries have been reported at the time of this report.
