Rape: Reps reject castration as punishment for perpetrators

The House of Representatives, on Thursday, rejected castration as punishment for rapists.

The lawmakers at the plenary voted against a prayer seeking to recommend castration for rapists.

They considered and adopted a motion on the rising cases of sexual violence in Nigeria.

A House member, Mr James Faleke, had recommended that persons found guilty of rape should be castrated.

But just before Faleke’s prayer was subjected to a voice vote, the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, asked what punishment should be meted out to an older female who rapes a younger male.

The Speaker’s comment generated noise in the chamber.

After they put the prayer to vote, the nays had it.
