The House of Representatives on Tuesday raised alarm over the increasing cases of “one chance” criminal operations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), calling for urgent action to address the growing insecurity in Abuja.
Following the tragic murder of Miss Nimah Sulaiman, a victim of “one chance” operators on October 17, 2024, the House directed relevant committees to meet with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, the FCT Police Commissioner, and the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS) to address the menace.
The resolution came after a motion of urgent national importance was raised by Ismail Haruna Dabo, a representative from Bauchi State whose Legislative Aide, Miss Sulaiman, was the victim.
The House also instructed its Committee on FCT to investigate the use of unregistered and unpainted taxis, which have become vehicles for criminal activities such as kidnapping and robbery. A report is expected within three weeks.
Dabo, deeply troubled by the rise in kidnappings and robberies by “one chance” operators, recounted how Miss Sulaiman was abducted at Bannex Junction, Wuse 2, while heading home. Despite paying a ransom, her body was discovered hours later, sending shockwaves through the community and highlighting the deteriorating security situation in the capital.
Lawmakers stressed the need for immediate measures to ensure the safety of citizens across the FCT.
