The House of Representatives has intensified calls for sanctions against Mr. Nyesom Wike, the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and six area council chairmen over allegations of insubordination and disregard for legislative authority.
During a heated meeting of the House Committee on FCT Area Council and Ancillary in Abuja on Tuesday, Rep. Ikonne Ifeanyi expressed strong condemnation of the minister and council chairmen’s failure to honor invitations from the House.
He emphasized the gravity of their actions, stating, “Why must we invite someone here and they decide when to appear? We should not plead for their attendance; they should seek us out.”
Ifeanyi continued, proposing punitive measures, declaring, “We will withhold approval for anything concerning the minister and council chairmen. Moreover, we will petition the president for the removal of Wike as FCT Minister.”
Chairman of the committee, Rep. Fredrick Agbedi, echoed Ifeanyi’s sentiments, condemning the disregard for legislative oversight as a breach of constitutional duties. He underscored the committee’s role in ensuring accountability and good governance, emphasizing the importance of the oversight function.
Agbedi criticized the council chairmen for their alleged lack of project initiatives despite substantial budget allocations.
“The six area council chairmen have not initiated, completed, or commissioned any projects in the past year, despite receiving billions in allocations,” he stated, highlighting what he deemed a failure to serve their constituencies effectively.
Rep. Adesola Adebayo, a committee member and former council chairman, emphasized the significance of the House’s oversight authority. He condemned the chairmen’s non-appearance as disrespectful, noting, “No chairman should ignore an invitation from their legislative oversight body.”
The committee unanimously agreed to escalate the issue to the House floor, seeking explanations from Wike and the chairmen for their absence.
They emphasized that such acts of insubordination would not be tolerated, asserting their authority to hold public officials accountable.
The standoff underscores growing tensions between the legislative and executive branches over transparency and accountability in governance.
As the House moves to enforce its demands, the political landscape in the FCT faces heightened scrutiny over compliance with legislative mandates.
