Reps Task New Service Chiefs to Restore Peace, Ensure Stability

Members of the House of Representatives have urged the newly appointed service chiefs to focus on restoring peace and stability across Nigeria.

This appeal came during the screening session of the service chiefs-designate on Wednesday, October 29, in Abuja.

The session was conducted by the joint committees on defence, army, navy, and air force, chaired by Babajimi Benson.

The service chiefs screened were Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Army Staff, Major General Waidi Shaibu, Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, and Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas.

Benson described the screening as a vital process to ensure transparency and public confidence in the country’s security leadership.

He explained that the session aimed to assess the competence, integrity, and readiness of the nominees to confront Nigeria’s growing security threats.

“Our country today faces evolving threats, from terrorism and banditry to cyber and maritime insecurity. Nigerians expect results, and we in the House of Representatives share that expectation.”

He said the committee looked forward to hearing practical strategies from the nominees on how to stabilise the country and restore public confidence in the Armed Forces.

In his response, Major General Waidi Shaibu promised to strengthen the military’s capacity through improved training, discipline, and welfare.

“With my wealth of experience in combating insurgencies across the country, I intend to inject new vigour into training and operations.

“By enhancing our security structure, we will create an environment where businesses can thrive and citizens can move freely without fear,” he said.

Benson assured that the committee would be fair and objective in its recommendations to ensure only the most capable officers were confirmed.
